SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A Sacramento Police K9 officer is recovering this morning after being shot by a home invasion suspect who was later shot and killed Monday night by officers.
Sacramento Police officers surrounded a home on the 2000 block of O'Neil Way Monday evening after getting a 9-1-1 call from a 17-year-old victim reporting the home invasion. The victim was able to leave the phone line open as the armed suspect tied her up and a 5-year-old boy who was also inside the home.
Five officers were positioned in the front of the house while an officer and his K9 partner Bandit covered the back. The suspect came out the back and a gun battle broke out, according to police. That's when Bandit was shot in the chest. The suspect then went back through the house and out the front. Police say he did not follow officer's commands to drop his gun and was hot by four officers.
The victims were found tied-up in the house but uninjured.
Bandit is in stable condition.
Police say the suspect is an Asian male in his 30's. They believe he was talking to an accomplice by cell phone during the crime. Officers had earlier detained a 23-year-old who was seen walking away from the home. They believe that man is the accomplice.
The officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave per department policy.
