WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Two men, including one accused of shooting at police during a chase, were captured early Wednesday after an intense search in West Sacramento.
The shooting suspect and another man detained earlier are accused of trying to steal an automatic teller machine at about 4:20 a.m. near the intersection of 15th and P streets in midtown Sacramento, police Officer Konrad Von Schoech said.
During the theft attempt, a witness called police. The two men accused of the crime fled in a pickup truck when officers arrived, authorities said.
The truck hit a fire hydrant near Grande Vista Avenue and Claredon Street in West Sacramento, and both men fled.
At some point in the chase, the man who had been driving the truck fired at least one shot at police, an official said.
The passenger was quickly captured, but the driver escaped, resulting in a manhunt lasting more than two hours and involving dozens of officers. No injuries were reported.
The West Sacramento search initially centered on the area of Park Boulevard and 11th Street a little before 5 a.m.
The shooting suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was taken into custody shortly after 7 a.m. in the 1100 block of Fernwood Street, Sacramento police Sgt. Norm Leong said.
Leong said the man was found in a detached garage and surrendered when police threatened to release a police dog.
A gun allegedly used by the driver was found by police in an adjacent yard.
The suspects' names were not being released because police were investigating whether the men may have ties to other crimes, Leong said.
During the dragnet, a Sacramento police helicopter looked for the man from the air, while local residents received a reverse 911 call urging them to stay indoors.
