Sergeant Steve Oliveira
K9 : Angus
Sergeant Steve Oliveira joined the Sacramento Police Department in 1994. He has worked assignments in patrol, the Neighborhood Enforcement Team (NET), and Investigations, including the Homicide Unit. He was promoted to sergeant in 2005 and assigned to the Patrol Division. Sgt. Oliveira had always aspired to be a K9 handler before he promoted, but commitments to other assignments kept him from doing so. In August of 2006, the K9 Sergeant position opened and he knew it was likely his last opportunity to be part of the team. Sgt. Oliveira tested for the position and was selected. Not only did he become the supervisor of the unit, but he also became the handler of an 87 pound purebred German Shepherd named “Angus” until he retired in September of 2010 at the age of 10. Angus now lives at home with Sgt. Oliveira. Sgt. Oliveira was teamed up with K9 Sig the same month Angus retired. Sig is an 86 pound German Shepherd, born in June 2007, who was imported from Germany. K9 Sig not only finds bad guys, but is also cross-trained in Explosives/Firearms Detection and Article Searching. He goes to work and comes home with Sgt. Oliveira everyday and is a valued member of not only the police K9 family, but his own family at home.
